50+ days without rain and counting . . .

Monday, July 30th, 2007

The weather is becoming a very “hot” topic in Umbria.  According to Umbria Meteo, the local experts on all things atmospheric, Perugia and most of Umbria will go through all of July without a single drop of rain.  In fact, it hasn’t rained since early June and you would have to go back to the summer of 1988 to find a similar weather pattern.  Temperatures have been very hot (approaching and surpassing 100) during the afternoons.  Thankfully, humidity has been a very low 30% and our new apartment has meter thick walls that keep it cool.  The wine-makers are talking about vine development that is a good 20 to 30 days ahead of schedule.  The sangiovese grapes in Montefalco have already started to turn red and there are dry leaves on the vines — sure signs of an early harvest.

There is, however, a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow and and a moderating trend in temperatures towards the middle of the week.

Salumi di Norcia

One of the highlights of dining in Umbria is the cured meats.  Many of them come from Norcia, a small village in the Valnerina that has become synonymous with great sausage and salami making (the Italian word for butcher shop is Norceria).  These skilled sausage makers obviously also had a sense of humor when they started naming their creations — Coglioni di Mulo (Mule’s Testicles) are pork salamis that are always sold in pairs; Palle di Nonno (let’s just say Nonno is grandfather and Palle di neve are snowballs) are also pork salamis; and my favorite Prosciutto Tascabile (Pocket Prosciutto) is a smaller version of the traditional cured ham.  These have become so famous (or infamous) that we often see Italian tourists from outside the region snapping photos and giggling at the butcher shop displays.

Lenticchie con Uova in camicia

Umbria has been extremely hot the past two weeks.  Midday temperatures have topped out at 38-40 degrees centigrade (around 100 degrees) with a very hot wind from the south.  It has not been great “eating” weather.  The temperatures do cool in the evenings and this salad of lentils, tomato and poached egg hit the spot.  A pork cutlet followed this primo and we washed it down with an excellent Sagrantino.

The “Bestest”

Ever wonder who produced the bestest chocolate in the world?  We found these products in all of the typical places.

After seeing this storefront, I shudder to think of all of the mistakes I’ve made in my written and spoken Italian over the years.
